Many of the objects on these pages are designated with an "M" number. This refers to their position in the Messier catalogue. Charles Messier lived in Paris in the 18th century. He was an astronomer primarily interested in comets, but during his search for these objects he catalogued around 100 other deep-sky objects so that they wouldn't be mistaken for comets. The catalogue was later expanded to 110.
