7. Finished

After adjusting curves in all three colour channels, the basic adjustments are finished. The image looks like this.

There are many other adjustments that can be made. A common problem with dim objects captured using long exposures is noise in the background. This can be reduced to an extent using the Gimp's Selective Gaussian Blur feature. Alternatively (or more commonly, also) a small amount of sharpening can be used to enhance certain features.
